Digital Smile Design is a planning protocol developed in 2009 that changed how the world's leading cosmetic dental clinics approach smile transformation. Before DSD, a dentist would examine the teeth, propose a treatment, and the patient would say yes or no based on a description and a wax model. The result was only visible at the end.
DSD changed the sequence entirely. It starts with the person - not the teeth. Photographs, video, and digital scans capture not just the static appearance of the mouth but how it moves when the patient talks, laughs, and smiles. The smile design is built from that data - around the whole face, the facial proportions, and the personality of the individual - and then shown to the patient as a simulation before any treatment is agreed.
The patient is not a passive recipient of a dentist's aesthetic judgment. They are a co-designer. What they want, what they see in the simulation, and what they feel when the mock-up is placed on their actual teeth - all of this shapes the final treatment plan before a single permanent change is made.

Not Every Clinic That Uses the Name Is Certified.
DSD certification requires rigorous training, compliance with protocols, investment in specific technology, and ongoing submission of all cases to an international digital planning centre for peer review. Vilafortuny was the first clinic in the Middle East to earn this designation - in 2017 - and remains the only certified DSD clinic in Dubai.
Our lead clinicians, Dr. Kathrin Trelles and Dr. Saghi Helmi, hold DSD Master status - the highest individual designation within the DSD programme, held by a very small number of clinicians globally. Every case processed through the DSD framework at Vilafortuny is reviewed by an international planning centre of specialists before treatment begins. This is not a standard available at any other clinic in Dubai.
The DSD Journey at Vilafortuny
Five stages. Every patient goes through each of them in sequence. Nothing is rushed and nothing is permanent until the patient has seen, approved, and confirmed exactly what their smile will look like.
The first consultation is a detailed information-gathering appointment. Photographs from multiple angles, video footage of you talking, smiling and laughing, intraoral digital scans, and X-rays are all captured. A structured conversation establishes your concerns, your personality, the aspects of your smile you want to address, and the result you are aiming for. This data forms the foundation of your entire smile design.
All records are uploaded to the DSD planning platform. The clinical team at Vilafortuny designs your smile using DSD software - taking into account your facial proportions, lip dynamics, and aesthetic goals. The plan is then submitted to the DSD international planning centre in Madrid, where a team of multi-disciplinary dental specialists review both the aesthetic quality and the clinical integrity of what is being proposed.
You return to the clinic for the most important appointment in the DSD process. A digital simulation is shown to you - and then, more powerfully, a physical mock-up is placed directly on your teeth. You see your new smile in your actual mouth, not on a screen. You can speak, smile, and look in the mirror. Any changes to colour, length, shape or proportion are made at this stage, before any permanent work begins.
Once the smile design is approved - and only then - treatment begins. The specific procedures depend on your case: this may be veneers, crowns, orthodontics, implants, whitening, gum contouring, or a combination. Because the design was fabricated digitally, the laboratory produces the restorations to match it precisely. The clinical team tracks progress against the digital plan throughout treatment.
Treatment concludes and the final result is placed. Because the entire journey was digitally planned and the mock-up was approved in advance, the final smile closely matches what was shown at the preview appointment. There are no surprises - only the result that was designed, agreed, and built specifically around your face.
