Full Mouth Extraction in Dubai

Full mouth extraction is the complete surgical removal of all remaining teeth in one or both arches. It is not a decision taken lightly - and at Vilafortuny, it is never recommended unless it is genuinely the right clinical path for the patient. When it is, it is performed with precision, appropriate anaesthesia, and a clear restorative plan already in place for what comes next.

Led by Dr. Khaled Alblooshi - a board-certified Consultant Periodontist and Implantologist with over 17 years of experience in periodontics, oral surgery, and implantology - our team ensures that every patient understands the process, their options, and their restoration pathway before a single tooth is removed.

When Full Mouth Extraction Is the Right Decision

Full mouth extraction is recommended when the remaining teeth are beyond the point where preservation is clinically viable or in the patient's long-term interest. This is not a shortcut - it is, in specific circumstances, the most responsible option available.

Clinical Indications

Severe advanced periodontal disease affecting all remaining teeth. Extensive decay that has compromised tooth structure beyond restoration. Full-arch trauma with multiple non-salvageable teeth. Failed previous dental work across the full arch.

Restoration Planning

At Vilafortuny, the restoration plan is agreed before extraction begins. Options include conventional full dentures, implant-retained dentures, or a fixed implant solution such as All-on-4. Your clinician will recommend the most appropriate route based on your bone structure, health, and goals.

Our approach

Extraction and restoration are planned as one continuous treatment at Vilafortuny - not as separate events. You will never leave a consultation knowing only that your teeth need to come out. You will leave knowing exactly what happens next.

How the Procedure Works

Every full mouth extraction at Vilafortuny is planned individually. There is no standard approach - the number of sessions, the type of anaesthesia, and the post-extraction care are all determined by the complexity of your case and your overall health.

01
Consultation & Assessment

A thorough clinical examination, full medical history review, and digital imaging - including X-rays or a 3D CBCT scan where indicated - gives the surgical team a complete picture of your remaining teeth, bone structure, and nerve anatomy before any treatment plan is finalised.

02
Treatment & Restoration Planning

Your surgeon discusses the extraction plan, sedation options, and the full restoration pathway with you. If immediate provisional teeth are being provided - such as immediate dentures or a temporary implant-supported prosthesis - this is also planned and prepared in advance of the surgical appointment.

03
Extraction Procedure

Teeth are removed under local anaesthesia, IV sedation, or general anaesthesia depending on the complexity of the case and patient preference. The gum tissue is carefully managed throughout to support healing and to prepare the site for the planned restoration. Most full mouth extractions are completed in a single session.

04
Immediate Post-Operative Care

Following the procedure, the surgical sites are dressed and any provisional prosthetics placed. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided - covering pain management, diet, oral hygiene, and what to expect during healing. The team remains contactable throughout your recovery.

05
Healing & Next Steps

Soft tissue healing takes four to six weeks. Bone remodelling continues for several months. Follow-up appointments monitor healing and determine the timing for the next stage of your restoration - whether that is implant placement, denture fitting, or further assessment.

Results
  • Complete elimination of pain, infection, and chronic dental disease
  • A clean, prepared foundation for restorative treatment - dentures, implants, or All-on-4
  • Relief from the ongoing cycle of failed treatments and recurring dental problems
  • Improved general health - chronic oral infection has documented links to systemic health conditions
  • A clear, agreed restoration plan from day one - no uncertainty about what comes next
Indications
  • Severe, advanced periodontal disease affecting all or most remaining teeth
  • Extensive decay that has rendered remaining teeth non-restorable
  • Full-arch trauma with multiple irreparably damaged teeth
  • Patients preparing for full-arch implant rehabilitation - All-on-4 or implant-retained dentures
  • Long-term denture wearers with remaining teeth causing pain, infection, or instability

Contraindications

  • Uncontrolled systemic conditions - such as uncontrolled diabetes, active cardiac conditions, or coagulation disorders - must be stabilised before surgery can proceed
  • Active oral infections may require antibiotic treatment prior to extraction in some cases
  • Patients taking bisphosphonates or undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy should inform the clinical team - a modified approach or specialist referral may be required
  • Current smokers face a higher risk of post-operative complications - cessation is strongly recommended before and after surgery
Before & After Your Procedure

Before Surgery

  • Follow any dietary or fasting instructions provided - particularly if sedation or general anaesthesia is planned
  • Arrange transport home - you will not be able to drive after the procedure, regardless of the type of anaesthesia used
  • Inform your surgical team of all current medications, supplements, and any recent changes to your health
  • Stop smoking as far in advance of surgery as possible - smoking significantly impairs healing and increases the risk of complications
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours before the procedure

After Surgery

  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face to manage swelling - 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, for the first 24 hours
  • Take prescribed pain relief and antibiotics as directed - do not wait until pain becomes severe to begin
  • Follow a soft food diet for the first two weeks - avoid anything hard, chewy, or very hot
  • Do not use straws - the suction pressure can dislodge blood clots and delay healing
  • Do not smoke during the healing period - the risk of dry socket and infection is significantly elevated in smokers
  • Maintain gentle oral hygiene around the surgical sites using the technique demonstrated by your clinical team
  • Attend all follow-up appointments - healing after full mouth extraction requires monitoring and the timing of your restoration depends on it

Frequently Asked Questions

Is full mouth extraction done in one appointment or multiple sessions?

It depends entirely on your case. Some patients have all remaining teeth removed in a single surgical session under sedation. Others - particularly where certain teeth are more complex to extract - may be treated across two appointments. Your clinician will discuss the most appropriate approach at your consultation, taking into account your health, the condition of your teeth, and your plans for restoration afterwards.

Will I have teeth during the healing period?

Yes. At Vilafortuny, we plan your restoration alongside the extraction so there is no period where you are left without teeth. A temporary prosthesis - immediate dentures or, in appropriate cases, a provisional implant-supported structure - can be placed at or shortly after the extraction appointment. Your clinician will explain the options available to you based on your restoration plan.

How long does recovery take after full mouth extraction?

Most patients experience the most significant discomfort and swelling in the first three to five days. By the end of the first week, the majority of patients are managing comfortably on normal pain relief and returning to light daily activities. Full soft tissue healing takes around four to six weeks, after which the gums are assessed for the next stage of your restoration - whether that is dentures, implants, or All-on-4.

What comes after full mouth extraction?

I put this off for two years because I was terrified. The team at Vilafortuny talked me through every single step before they did anything. On the day itself I was so much calmer than I expected to be. The aftercare was thorough and I always felt like I could call if something worried me.
