Dental Examinations in Dubai

A dental examination is not just a check — it is the foundation of every treatment decision we make at Vilafortuny. It is the appointment where problems are caught before they become expensive, where early signs of disease are identified before they cause pain, and where you leave with a clear picture of your oral health and a plan to protect it.

Most patients visit us every six months. Some need more frequent monitoring. All leave knowing exactly what is happening in their mouth — and what, if anything, needs to be done about it.

What a Dental Examination at Vilafortuny Covers

Our examinations go significantly further than a standard dental check-up. Every appointment includes a full clinical assessment alongside the most advanced diagnostic technology available in Dubai.

Clinical Assessment

  • Visual inspection of all teeth for decay, fractures, wear, and discolouration
  • Gum health assessment — probing depths, recession, inflammation, and bleeding
  • Bite and occlusion analysis — identifying uneven pressure, grinding patterns, and jaw alignment
  • Soft tissue examination — lips, tongue, cheeks, palate, and throat
  • Existing restoration check — condition of any fillings, crowns, veneers, bridges, or implants

Advanced Diagnostic Imaging

  • Digital X-rays — emit 90% less radiation than traditional X-rays, with immediate high-resolution results
  • Panoramic X-ray — a full view of all teeth, roots, jaw, and surrounding bone in a single image
  • Cephalometric X-ray — used in orthodontic and jaw assessment to evaluate bone structure and facial profile
  • 3D CBCT Scan — three-dimensional imaging for implant planning, complex root assessment, and structural diagnosis where standard X-rays are insufficient

Specialist Screening Tools

  • Velscope oral cancer screening — a fluorescence device that identifies abnormal tissue changes invisible to the naked eye. Non-invasive, under two minutes, included in every routine examination
  • Diagnodent laser cavity detection — identifies early-stage decay inside teeth and beneath the enamel surface, where X-rays and visual examination alone would miss it
Why this matters

Together, these tools give your dentist a genuinely complete picture of your oral health — not an educated estimate. Very few dental clinics in Dubai offer this combination of screening technology as standard in a routine examination.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first examination at Vilafortuny is slightly longer than a routine check-up — 30 to 40 minutes for adults, and 20 to 30 minutes for children — to ensure we gather a full picture from the start.

01
Before You Arrive

Bring your Emirates ID or government-issued photo ID for registration. Arrive 10 minutes early to complete a New Patient Form covering your medical history, current medications, and any concerns. If you have previous X-rays or dental records, bring them.

02
During the Appointment

Your dentist will begin with a conversation — asking about your general health, any symptoms, and what you want from your dental care. A full clinical examination follows, including any X-rays or specialist screening indicated by your case.

03
After the Examination

Your dentist will walk you through any recommended treatments — the reason for each, the options available, and the associated costs. Nothing begins without your full understanding and consent. You leave with a clear plan and a follow-up schedule that suits your needs.

Why Regular Examinations Matter

Dental problems rarely announce themselves early. Gum disease, tooth decay, and even oral cancer can develop gradually and without symptoms — by the time there is pain, the condition is often significantly more advanced and more costly to treat than it would have been at an earlier stage.

Regular examinations at Vilafortuny mean that small problems are identified and resolved while they are still small. The investment in a routine check-up is consistently smaller — in time, discomfort, and cost — than the treatment required when issues are left to progress.

Most patients

Every 6 months — routine maintenance, early detection, peace of mind.

Higher-risk patients

Every 3–4 months — active gum disease, implants, orthodontic treatment, or a history of frequent decay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a dental check-up take at Vilafortuny?

I'd been avoiding the dentist for about three years - mostly out of embarrassment if I'm honest. When I finally came to Vilafortuny the dentist was so matter-of-fact about everything. Showed me the X-rays, explained what needed doing, gave me options. No drama, no guilt trip. I've been back every six months since.

Do I need an X-ray at every check-up?

Not necessarily - it depends on your individual situation. For new patients, a baseline set of X-rays is usually recommended so we have a full picture to work from. For returning patients, we only take X-rays when there is a clinical reason to do so. When we do, we use digital X-rays which emit around 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays.

What is the Velscope screening and do I need it?

The Velscope is a handheld device that uses fluorescence light to detect changes in soft tissue invisible under normal conditions - including early signs of abnormal cell changes that could indicate oral cancer. It takes under two minutes, is entirely painless, and is included as part of every routine examination at Vilafortuny. Oral cancer detected early has a very high survival rate. We consider this a standard part of responsible dental care.

I haven't been to the dentist in a few years - will I be judged?

Absolutely not. A significant number of patients who come to us for the first time haven't had a check-up in several years, for all kinds of reasons - anxiety, time, a bad experience elsewhere, or simply life getting in the way. Our job is to assess where things are now, explain what we find honestly, and work with you on what comes next. No lecture, no pressure, no judgement.
