Children's smiles are precious, and keeping their teeth healthy is essential for their overall wellbeing. Those tiny teeth can be tricky to clean, especially the molars at the back of the mouth, where deep grooves and pits trap food and harbour cavity-causing bacteria. This is where dental sealants come in, acting as a protective shield for your child's teeth.
What are dental sealants?
Dental sealants are thin, paint-like coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Made from a clear or white resin material, they are applied by a dentist during a quick and painless procedure.
Why are sealants important for children?
Children's teeth are more susceptible to cavities than adult teeth, partly because their enamel is not fully developed and partly because the pits and fissures on molars are hard to clean with brushing alone. Sealants fill in these grooves, creating a smooth surface that is easier to keep clean and that prevents food and bacteria from accumulating, significantly reducing the risk of cavities.
The benefits of dental sealants
Sealants can significantly reduce a child's cavity risk, by as much as 80 per cent. The procedure is quick and painless, usually taking only a few minutes per tooth, and the protection lasts for several years with proper care. Sealants are also a cost-effective way to prevent cavities, saving on more involved treatments later, and they support good oral hygiene habits by making teeth easier to keep clean.
Is your child a candidate?
We recommend sealants for most children, particularly those at higher risk of cavities. Your child may benefit if they have deep pits or fissures in their molars, find it difficult to brush and floss effectively, or have a history of cavities.
