When does my child need GA?
We never recommend general anaesthesia unless it is genuinely necessary. It may be the best option when a child is very young and not yet able to cooperate during a dental visit, or when a procedure is complex and takes longer, such as treating multiple cavities in one sitting. It can also be the right choice for children with significant dental anxiety where other calming techniques have not worked, and for children with special needs or other health concerns that make a regular dental visit challenging.
What to expect as a parent
Your child's comfort and safety are always our top priority. Before treatment, your dentist will explain everything about general anaesthesia and why it is the best course of action for your child's specific situation, and will happily answer any questions you have. You and your child will also have the chance to meet the anaesthetist who will monitor them throughout the procedure, and we will provide clear instructions on how to prepare, including any pre-procedural fasting requirements.
During the procedure, a highly trained anaesthetist remains by your child's side at all times, ensuring their safety and comfort. Afterwards, your child is taken to a recovery room and monitored until fully awake, and you will usually be able to be with them during this time. The dentist then provides detailed aftercare instructions to support a smooth recovery at home.
